Innovating Intensive Care

Since the transition from paper to electronic health records (EHRs) began in early 1970s, the way clinicians review clinical data has slowly begun to capitalise more and more on the capabilities of technology. However, there comes a time when incremental evolution of existing systems is no longer enough, but a paradigm shift is required to take full advantage of the state-of-the-art innovation. At Oxaigen, the present practices of the healthcare industry are dissected and analysed to envision and articulate what it currently means and what it could mean to be a doctor. Oxaigen is redefining what the reality of intensive care unit doctors, nurses, and even patients can be like, and the Oxaigen user interface is one of the first steps that sets that vision in motion.

From early 2022 onwards, we have worked to translate our vision into a front-end. The process began with a discovery phase: interviews with doctors, research, and user experience activities such as card-sorting built the foundations for user-oriented design of the application. Step by step a picture of the clinical environment and the thinking processes of residents and intensivists was sketched: in the face of severe illness, the ICU seemed remarkably structured and ordered to an outsider. The routines of the staff and the patients bring consistency and predictability to the otherwise deeply uncertain situations. Much of the time is spent reviewing and analysing patient data from the EHR, an experience that does not always fit the needs or problem-solving mindset of the staff.

Using the findings of the discovery, the iterative design and development process lead us on a path towards a dynamic and interconnected user interface as the means to visualise the patient data and the artificial intelligence-based counsel. Context-aware visualisations and usability-driven interactivity strive to make exploring relevant patient data effortless as well as enjoyable as moments of insight begin to dominate.

As the Beta version of Oxaigen is just around the corner, we are excited to see the backend switch on the lights and bring the user interface alive. Don't wait, sign up for our waiting list today and be a part of the future of healthcare.
